Edge
Edge
Four panels, oil on birch ply: each panel, 59.4 cm x 80 cm
Painted on panel with acrylics and oil, this works reflects my practice of quick gestural painting: accepting then rejecting the intuitive mark, painting in and out until a visual balance is discovered. The ‘Edge’ refers to the forgotten, overgrown embankment that straddles a trickle of the River Roding near my home. Walking, running, avoiding, partaking; this fenced no-go zone captures the introspective space between reality and fantasy so often occupied during the last year and lockdown.
Edge II
Working reductively and additively with rags, brushes, rollers and squeegee; this monoprint reflects aspects of my practice as a painter: accepting then rejecting the intuitive mark, until a visual balance is discovered. ‘Edge’ II refers to the same embankment with its swamp like trees and weeping branches that inspired the painting by the same name. A concrete fenced pathway escorts the curious walker away from its burrows and wildlife to a park and walled garden. Obsessed with this lush, natural diorama, the print and paint works seek to reunite the introspective space between reality and fantasy.
